From 1 February 2019, all Personal Mobility Aids (PMAs) like mobility scooters and motorised wheelchairs will need to have a maximum speed of 10km/h.

In September 2018, the authorities announced this regulation after receiving feedback that some retailers tried to promote non-compliant e-scooters as mobility scooters. In order to prevent abuse and modification of mobility scooters, the authorities decided to implement this criteria. Furthermore, a set of regulations and penalties relating to sales and advertisement of PMAs on retailers has also introduced.

Where PMAs can be used?

From 1 February 2019, new regulations for Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) will be effective. These regulations include:

  1.  Speed limit for riding on footpaths will be lowered from 15km/h to 10km/h
  2.  Cyclist to use helmets when riding on roads
  3.  Active mobility device users to stop and look out for vehicles at road crossings. Motorists are requried to slow down and look out for pedestrians and active mobility users at road crossings too.
